Benzonia Man Charged With Killing Woman in 2021 Parking Lot Crash

A Benzonia man has been charged for in Benzonia last August, according to Michigan State Police.

On August 20 at 12:07 p.m., troopers were told that someone had been hit by a truck while walking in the parking lot of the Shop-N-Save.

The driver of the truck, David Gouin, now 31, of Benzonia, was driving the truck and stopped to talk to someone in the parking lot. When he was done talking, he drove forward and hit Catherine Kelder, 77, of Frankfort, who was walking in front of his previously parked truck.

Kelder was taken to the hospital where she died from her injuries, according to Michigan State Police, and Gouin told troopers that he didn’t see Kelder in front of his truck when he drove forward.

During the investigation, troopers found an unregistered handgun in Gouin’s truck. Gouin didn’t have a permit to carry a concealed weapon.

Gouin was charged with one count of moving violation causing death, a one-year misdemeanor, and one count of carrying a concealed weapon, a five-year felony. He is expected back in court in mid-July.
