A group of parents, students and alumni voiced their concerns about gun violence during Monday’s school board meeting in Traverse City.

The organizers of the group set out 19 kids shoes and two adult shoes to symbolize the lives loss at Robb Elementary in Uvalde, Texas.

Jay Berger organized Monday’s group to speak out at TCAPs school board meeting because of the recent rise in shootings. He says as a grandparent, he just wants to keep students in Traverse City safe.

“I don’t think you can stop it, but I think there’s a lot that we can do,” said Berger. “We want to do a complete analysis. A gap analysis of where we are with security in our current building, what’s the best practices and what do we need to do to close that gap.”

School board members say they understand where Monday’s concern comes form, and they are continuously working to keep kids safe.
