Senate Passes New Bill on Pausing Gas Tax, Awaiting House Vote

You could soon see some relief at the pump, if lawmakers and the governor can agree on a deal.

Last month, the governor vetoed a bill that would pause the state gas tax because it wouldn’t take effect until next year and not provide relief right now. The Senate passed another bill that would pause both the gas tax and sales tax on fuel, and it would take effect June 15 and run through September 15.

But since then, the bill has sat in house committees waiting to be voted on. Governor Whitmer has said she would be more open to a plan like that, as long as the details on how they cover that shortfall in the budget is appropriate.
