Birch Street Elementary Celebrates Ground Breaking of New Construction Projects

Birch Street Elementary in Kalkaska started its last day of school this year with the ground breaking of a series of construction projects.

With the opening of this construction project, paid for with a bond proposal from the community on May’s election of 2021, the Kalkaska Public School District plans on phase one of the project to add a new gym and eight new classrooms to the elementary school. The superintendent of the district hopes the construction will be completed by the fall of 2023.

Also in 2023, the district hopes to move to phase two of the project, where renovations will take place for Cherry Street Intermediate, which the district hopes to turn into a new early-childhood center.

“This is almost a $17 million project,” said Rick Heitmeyer, Superintendent of the Kalkaska Public School District. “So we’re going to be adding some buildings, some classrooms and a gym at Birch Street. And then a year from now, we will start on the renovations at Cherry Street Intermediate, which is going to become our early childhood center. So, you know, we’re in the process of transitioning into a whole different brand.”

Heitmeyer also hopes that cherry Street Intermediate and the new early childhood center will be open by the fall of 2024.
