Traverse City Man Arraigned in Court for Armed Robbery

A Traverse City man remains behind bars after threatening two teens in Grand Traverse County Sunday night.

28 year-old Duane Charles Fortenberry was arraigned in 86th District Court on Tuesday on a single count of armed robbery.

This comes after two male Traverse City minors picked up a 27 year-old male friend in Garfield Township on Sunday. That friend then asked to pick up Fortenberry in Traverse City. Once in the car, Fortenberry demanded the teens hand over their phones, wallets and belongings, threatening to harm them if they didn’t do what he said.

Fortenberry was arrested outside an ATM they had stopped at, after the 27 year-old male called 9-1-1 and the minors alerted a nearby police officer. He was attempting to have someone withdraw $700 for him.

The 16 year-old driver reported that Fortenberry struck him on the face, but no one received any other injuries.

“There was no weapons found of any kind when he was arrested, but the belief was there, he had made comments that he was armed or that he had a weapon and was going to harm the juveniles in the car,” said Sergeant Brandon Brinks, with the Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office.

Fortenberry is expected back in court later this month.
