The average student walks away from college with a diploma and about $40,000 of debt, but that number can go as high as $250,000 for Ivy League schools.

Last month, the Department of Education made more changes to the federal student loan system that will help bring millions of borrowers closer to receiving debt forgiveness.

The program allows borrowers to avoid loan default by lowering their monthly payments based on their income and family size, but that’s not all you can do to get our of your debt.
