Great Lakes Maritime Academy Students Preparing to Leave for Five Month Training
Cadets from the Great Lakes Maritime Academy are preparing for departure.
They’ll be taking the training ship, the “State of Michigan,” out for about five months. There will be three phases of the course of that time, with around 160 cadets in total to help them earn their sea time for graduation.
One culinary intern will also be on board in each phase.
The ship departs Friday at 7 p.m. from the academy.
“They’ll be learning shipboard, learning shipboard routine, the engineers will be standing watch in the engine room, the deck cadets will be standing at deck watch,” said Jerry Achenbach, superintendent of Great Lakes Maritime Academy. “We are very proud that the faculty and staff found a way for the vessel to sail through Covid safely but it’s good to be doing it in 2022.”
The public is welcome to come and watch the “State of Michigan” depart.
