Salute to Service: Pillar of U.S. Coast Guard Station St. Ignace Retires After 21 Years of Service

“It’s crazy, really crazy,” Dean said. “21 years went by quick.”

He spent 19 of those 21 years in the Straits of Mackinac.

Mostly serving the St. Ignace community he’s grown to love.

“Beautiful place to raise a family, and a beautiful place to retire,” Dean said. “I met my best friend here…”

“Not only is he a shipmate, he’s like a brother to me,” Benson said.

That was both their first time stationed in the Straits.

“Dan and I, we get stationed other places but we never get stationed far,”

Together for the beginning and the end. Benson served as master of ceremonies for Dean’s retirement ceremony.

“I do take pride in that as he was there for me in the beginning of my career- that I can be there for the end of his career,” Benson said. “He’s a friend, a mentor and a brother to all.”

“I’m looking forward to the change (but) I’m definitely going to miss it for sure,” Dean said. “I wouldn’t change it for the world– it’s been a fun ride.”
