Students Compete in Annual Region 16 Michigan Industrial Technology Education Society Competition

Students from four northern Michigan schools created impressive projects that were displayed and judged in Sault Ste. Marie.

The annual Region 16 Michigan Industrial Technology Education Society, or MITES, was held at Sault Area High School Saturday.

Students from Pickford, Brimley, Rudyard, Sault Ste. Marie and Detour created amazing work, ranging from wood and plastic to drafting.

One senior from Soo High wasn’t even interested in drafting until a couple of years ago.

On Saturday, he took first place with his design, and is now heading to Michigan Tech to major in construction management.

“It shows that the trades aren’t really dead,” said Robert Smart, a senior at Sault Area High School. “I like it because it gives us a chance to see other school’s other wood ship programs and all the other stuff that they can do.”

First through fourth place finishers on Saturday advance to the state competition in Lansing on Wednesday.
