The Department of  Veterans Affairs is handing out hundreds of thousands of dollars in grant money to improve transitional housing in Gaylord.

Patriot Place is operated by Goodwill Industries of Northern Michigan and offers individual housing units for male veterans as they transition from homelessness to permanent homes.

The V.A. is awarding Goodwill $525,000 to add an additional bathroom to every one of their eight homes that house three veterans each.  They say the goal is slow the spread of illness and cut down on the risks that can result in close-quarter living for homeless veterans.

“It reduces the prospect of disputes between residents and it also makes my job as director much easier because there is no dispute on who dirtied the bathroom on my walk-throughs and inspect the property to make sure everything’s clean,” said Patriot Place Director John Zangoulas.

Patriot Place is the only transitional housing development in Northern Michigan for male veterans.
