Cheboygan County Sheriff Deputy Cleared for February Deadly Shooting

73 529 22 SceneA Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Deputy has been cleared by the county prosecutor in a Feb. 10 deadly shooting in Ellis Township.

On Feb. 10, the Cheboygan County Sheriff’s Office requested help from Michigan State Police to investigate an officer involved shooting.

Deputies had been dispatched to a home on Afton Road in Ellis Township for a welfare check of a woman after she had contacted family members stating she was in trouble and in need of immediate help.

As deputies were entering the home, Aian Tracy, 32, attacked deputies with a hatchet. Shots were fired and Tracy was pronounced dead at the scene.

One deputy was treated for non-life threatening injuries after being struck with the hatchet.

According to Michigan State Police, in the findings, the Cheboygan County Prosecutor noted the deputy acted in lawful self-defense in his use of deadly force. The actions of the suspect posed an immediate or extreme threat of death of serious injury to both deputies responding to the scene.

Troopers say the investigation is now closed.
