An extreme Fire Threat is expected to continue across the southern Plains today as strong winds meet with worsening drought conditions.
This time last year 64.36% of the lower 48 was under some sort of drought category. 8.92% was in the extreme drought. Extreme drought is the worst drought category (level 4 out of 4).

As spring 2022 approaches the contiguous United States is up 69.29% from last year. The good news is extreme drought is down to 2.13%, much lower than this time last year.

And while much of the United States is suffering from drought, northern Michigan is making up for the dry winter for many. Snowfall is below average for much of Northern Michigan, except for Sault Ste Marie and Traverse City. Both saw their fair share of Lake Effect Snow during the 2021-2022 winter season.

Since we are seeing the rain now, this is GREAT news for farmers in Northern Michigan as it reduces the chance of dead crops in the spring and summertime (for now).

The wet weather is also is good news for our spring and summer fire threat. Expecting much less of a fire threat as we round second base in spring 2022.
