Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office Searching for Man Who Made Bomb Threats in Fishtown

One man is facing up to several felony charges after calling the Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office, making bomb threats.

Deputies responded to a call at nearly 8 p.m. Monday night of a man who threatened to kill his wife and said he had placed a bomb somewhere in Fishtown, set to go off in one hour.

Multiple units assisted, including Michigan State Police, but no explosive device was found.

“We went down there, quartered off the area, we evacuated people from homes and we went in and searched room-by-room, and floor-by-floor of several of the businesses down there,” says Leelanau County Sheriff Mike Borkovich.

Deputies did not find anything last night and still don’t know if it was a hoax or if something just never went off.

“We’re still investigating the nature of the call and the caller, trying to determine why this person would do this or say this, obviously there’s times when people have relationship issues and they’re angry about things, but this is no way to do something like that,” says Borkovich.

The caller told the sheriff’s office that he had placed a package in a barrel outside of a bar facing the water.

With the caller still out there, almost all of the locals were afraid to even comment on the threats.

“We are investigating it, we’re going to use other agencies’ help as well, we are going to be in a situation where obviously the Michigan State Police and the Leelanau County Sheriff’s Office, the Leland Fire Department and Grand Traverse Fire Departments are all on scene,”says Borkovich.

The biggest thing the sheriff’s office wants to stress is that they are taking this very seriously.

“We spent about five hours on scene last night, most of us weren’t back in until four in the morning, so it was a long night and we’re glad nothing happened and we’ll go from there,” says Borkovich.

Deputies say they do have a name, whether its real or not, but they are still investigating who this caller is and where these threats came from.
