Northern Michigan Community Pet Center Holds Fundraiser for Dog Trainer’s Family
Friends and family at Northern Michigan Community Pet Center are doing everything they can to help one of their own.
After losing her husband Rick to a long battle with cancer on Thursday, trainer Kathy McCarthy’s pet community was right by her side.
“There are a lot of bills that have accumulated due to the cancer, so she was overjoyed when we talked to her—she couldn’t hold back her tears, saying how thankful she was that we were going to be able to help in some way,” says her sister, Patti Goudey.
On Saturday, fundraising efforts brought in people for everything, from grooming services to gift raffles to kitten adoptions.
All of the proceeds from everything will go to McCarthy.
“We’re just continuing to do this to make sure Kathy is taken care of,” says Northern Michigan Community Pet Center owner Kelly Lemcool. “Our building is a family in itself, we all spend a lot of time here throughout the day, so we’ve gotten to know each other really well”
McCarthy has made a name for herself through running Peaceful Paws Dog Training within the facility.
“She is a wonderful dog trainer, she is also a veteran, as well as her husband Rick, and they have given so much to our community,” says Lemcool.
McCarthy and her husband both served in the U.S. Navy, Rick for 16 years and Kathy for four.
Goudey says they are a proud family, who never ask for anything.
“She’s not one to ask for help, so we really want to just extend our heartfelt to her, to know that not only family is behind her, but the whole community here,” says Goudey.
Northern Michigan Community Pet Center is continuing to take monetary donations through the mail or in the form of cans for their pop can drive through next weekend.
