Interlochen & TCAPS Reach Deal Over Community School Building Ownership

Interlochen Center for the Arts and Traverse City Area Public Schools have reached a settlement to avoid a legal appeal over ownership of a building.

Last August, the Grand Traverse County Circuit Court ruled that ownership of the Interlochen Community School should revert back to Interlochen Center for the Arts.

Both schools came together on an agreement where TCAPS will not appeal the ruling.

In exchange, Interlochen agreed not to use the Community School building as a charter or public school until 2029.

After the 2028-29 school year, TCAPS will have the option to use the building as a public school.

If they decide not to, Interlochen can start operating a charter or public school there.

Interlochen has been using the building for short-term projects like Michigan State Police Canine training, Fire Department training, community recreational activities, and film shoots.

They’re also looking at using the Interlochen Community School for daycare and summer camps.
