Coast Guard To Break Ice in South Channel

U.S. Coast Guard icebreakers are planning to fracture ice separating Bois Blanc Island and Cheboygan, also known as the South Channel.

According to the U.S. Coast Guard, Captain of the Port Sault Sainte Marie will open the South Channel on Thursday.

They say the ice is deteriorating, and by breaking up the field of ice, deterioration further increases as well as enables the local ferry to resume service to Bois Blanc Island.

The Coast Guard recommends that those who recreate on the ice, especially those who fish, operate snowmobiles or all-terrain-vehicles on ice-covered waters, plan their activities carefully and use caution on the ice.

Additionally, they recommend staying away from charted shipping channels.
