CMU Students React to North Campus Halls Temporarily Closing

at Central Michigan University has been declining in the past several years, and the university said they’ve had to make some temporary changes on campus until enrollment goes up.

This fall CMU will temporarily close four residence halls in north camps, and reopen three halls in south campus, because of low enrollment numbers.

“All the business students and all the art students who chose those dorms to be close to their classes now have to move to the opposite side of campus,” said sophomore Katelyn Grech.

In an email to students CMU said those business and honors students would be moving to resident halls on south campus.

To other students, that left them with little other options.

“Our backup plan was go back to where we are now, which is Thorpe South,” said freshman Sam Bouren. “Since that’s going to be the honors hall next year, it’s not really an option anymore.”

CMU said the closure of north campus residence halls, and in turn, dining halls, will open more options for dining elsewhere.

“They can focus more on east dining hall because that’s a really nice dining hall,” said Bouren. “They said closing with north, they can focus more on south and east, which makes sense.”

CMU said this is a temporary closure, and the university anticipates needing the residence halls as enrollment grows.

“I’m hopeful that they’ll go back up,” said Bouren. “I think it will. It’s just Covid.”

The university announced in February they would be building a new housing complex on the commuter lot, so closing four residence halls and building a new one, students said, doesn’t make sense.

“I think closing the entire dorm, but then still building another dormitory where the commuter lot is, I don’t personally think that makes sense to me,” said Grech.
