North Central Michigan College is offering a new degree for those interested in pursuing a career in firefighting.
The Fire Science Degree is a two-year program that includes classes on Emergency Medical Services.
Obtaining this degree would give students an extra leg up when applying for positions in fire service. It will be a hands-on program with instructors giving aspiring firefighters experience in the field.
According to Dean of Technical Education Jim Cousino, those trained in both fire and paramedics could earn up to $80,000 in Michigan.
“When we did a survey with local firefighters and classes as well as fire chiefs in the areas, there was a real need and a want to get college credit for the classes they were taking because certifications are so big that we wanted to have that collection for them,” said Cousino.
The Fire Science Degree will be available at North Central Michigan College this Fall.
