Meals on Wheels has teamed up with Moomers Homemade Ice Cream to offer a fun way for the community to get involved and donate to a good cause.

Meals on Wheels is an initiative put on by the Northwest Michigan Community Action Agency (NMCAA).

The month of March marks the beginning of their program, March for Meals.

Lisa Robitshek, Manager of Meals on Wheels, says it’s a fun way to donate to a good cause.

“Federal and state funds account for only 30 percent of the funds we receive. Which means 70% we have to really reach out to the community to raise,” Robitshek explains.

Moomers and Meals on Wheels have been partnering for years.

Owner of Moomers, John Plummer, says when their relationship first started, it was just a way for them to give back to the community.

“Low and behold, they actually serviced my grandma when she was alive and when she was up here. So, it now really [is] a personal endeavor,” Plummer says.

Meals on Wheels and Moomers teamed up this year to provide a couple of ways for Michiganders to get involved.

One of those ways is an ice cream flavor contest.

The contest features flavors created by preschoolers from four of NMCAA’s early childhood classrooms.

Michiganders can vote for the winning flavor on their Facebook page. Robitshek says the flavor contest is really heating up.

“Some of the names were like sprinkle of kindness and meals and wheels better, because it makes people feel better when we come see them. So, it will be fun to see people participate in that,” Robitshek says.

The winning flavor will be sold from March 11-20.

Additionally, for the second year, Moomers will also offer a take-home sundae kits.

A sundae kit comes with a half-pint of chocolate and vanilla ice cream, along with five toppings. All proceeds from the sundae kits will go towards Meals on Wheels.

Businesses can also get involved by purchasing sundae kits through March 8 at 5 p.m.
