McLaren Hospital in Petoskey to Transition into Teaching Hospital

McLaren Healthcare is planning to change their hospital in Petoskey from what they call a community hospital to a teaching hospital.

According to CEO Todd Burch, the Petoskey hospital is the largest in northern Michigan without a training program.

They plan to offer a new residency program for students who would spend one year learning family medicine in Flint, and then finish the next two years in Petoskey.

According to Burch, only 10% of physicians work in rural areas like northern Michigan.

This new program would hopefully encourage students to stay in the area.

Normal operations of the hospital will not change when family medicine residents arrive to continue their education.
