Grand Traverse County Commissioners approved a development contract focused on the manufacturing and skilled trades industry in Traverse City.

The contract is a one-year, $50,000 economic development contract that city commissioners pledged with Traverse Connect.

The contract will work at getting more people involved with jobs in the trades and manufacturing industry.

They plan to help new manufacturing firms grow with targeted programs designed to help them get established.

President and CEO of Traverse Connect, Warren Call says expanding skill and manufacturing jobs is crucial.

“Trades are what keeps the economy humming. You get a lot of people wanting to visit this area, we need to build stuff,” said Call. “We need to build houses, we need to build facilities, we need to have plumbing, we need to have the electric, we need to have all those things that keep our existing infrastructure in place as well as help us expand infrastructure.”

Call believes that getting more people involved in the trades will result in more construction projects, which in turn would lead to year round population growth.

According to Call, the manufacturing and skilled trades industry, “underpins a lot of the other things going on.”

Call hopes to get more school kids interested in the trades, and says they plan to set up specific programs for middle school students to get them interested in the trades at a young age.
