The Brownfield Redevelopment Authority on Thursday approved funding for a new outdoor fitness court.

Located near the 10th street Tart Trail head on the Boardman Lake Loop trail system, the outdoor fitness court will provide a bodyweight circuit training system designed for adults of all ages and abilities.

“Grand Traverse County holds wellness as a core principle, not only for our employees, but for the community at large. Not everyone has the know how to exercise safely or access to equipment or gym memberships. This outdoor fitness court will allow anyone a no cost opportunity to engage in exercise activity according to their ability” said County Administrator Nate Alger in a statement. “This fitness court will go a long way for the overall wellness opportunities we have for our community.”

The fitness court is the first in a three-part phase of an overall redevelopment project. The next two phases call for the replacement and development of a park and a new housing development.

Current plans call to break ground in March, with a ribbon cutting ceremony and grand opening to follow in June.

The fitness court is being brought to Grand Traverse County through partnerships between Priority Health, National Fitness Campaign, the City of Traverse City and Grand Traverse County.
