A Traverse City man has been arrested for soliciting a minor for immoral purposes, according to Michigan State Police.

On Tuesday, Jan. 11, a trooper from the Michigan State Police Cadillac Post was contacted by 26-year-old Ian Machir, who wanted to report that he was being harassed.

Machir told MSP that this past summer, he was attempting to meet up with a girl he met on a dating app. But instead of meeting the girl, he says he was ambushed by a “Chris Hansen wannabe” who accused Machir of being a predator.

Troopers say a video was taken in July 2021 and was posted to YouTube.

They say Machir’s identity was recently compromised, and he was receiving messages about the video in which he was being harassed and called a pedophile. Machir also lost his job due to the video.

Troopers say an appointment was made for Machir to be interviewed at the MSP Traverse City Detachment on Jan. 13, but Machir cancelled the interview the day before.

They say another interview was scheduled for Jan. 24, but Machir cancelled a second time.

According to Michigan State Police, troopers obtained a search warrant for Machir’s telephone and seized it at his home in Traverse City.

When troopers asked Machir why he cancelled the interview, Machir stated that he didn’t have anything else he needed to talk about, and that he was good.

Machir’s phone was turned over to the MSP Computer Crimes Unit and a report was submitted to the Grand Traverse County Prosecutor’s Office.

On Tuesday, a warrant was issued for Machir’s arrest. He was arrested Tuesday by the MSP Fugitive Team at his home, and lodged in the Grand Traverse County Jail.

Machir was charged Wednesday in the 86th District Court of Grand Traverse County for one count children accosting for immoral purposes and one count using a computer to commit a crime.
