Historic TaffelTown Lodge Open to the Community Again

TaffelTown Lodge opened its doors in 1948.

The lodge has been a wide range of things, from a general store to a honky tonk. But the new owners of Taffeltown Lodge are turning it into what they believe Fife Lake needs.

“It’s always those places where I’m on a road, and I do a double-take and a U-turn and go back to it. That’s this place,” said Rene Anderson, co-owner of TaffelTown Lodge.

Dean Horn and Rene Anderson bought TaffelTown Lodge in 2019.

“It needed our love. We were looking at it for a long time. When we retired, we wanted to restore something,” said Anderson.

The purchase comes after the building sat abandoned since 2014.

“Food still in refrigerators and freezer, so it was a mess,” said Dean Horn, co-owner of TaffelTown Lodge. “You just screw the freezer door down tight and take it to the dump and tell them, don’t open it.”

The couple took on the restoration project room by room.

“There were all kinds of issues. The place hadn’t been winterized for one, so it just everything had froze for years,” said Anderson. “The first year we were working in here and headlamps because there wasn’t any electricity. We had to wear masks because of fire extinguisher residue everywhere.”

After three years of hard work and constant challenges, TaffelTown Lodge is ready to be a restaurant again.

“This is a big step for the community to have a place where they can come in,” said Horn.

However, the overall restoration project is far from over.

“There are lots of things to expand here. There’s a lot of acreages we could put in some campsites,” said Anderson.

“We’re starting small, and the possibilities seem endless here,” said Horn

For now, TaffelTown Lodge is offering take-out only and all the food is homemade by Rene.

They plan to open the bar and the dining room soon.
