Governor Whitmer Proposes More Money for Before-and-After School Programs

Governor Whitmer is expected to announce a major investment for Michigan’s school systems on Wednesday.

In the 2023 state budget, the Governor proposes $18.4 billion for K-12 students. It includes $50 million for before-and-after school programs.

Every weekday, the Cadillac Area YMCA puts on the Afterschool Teen Center.

During the afterschool program, any middle or high school student can get homework help, mentorship or enjoy several recreational activities from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m.

“We’re kind of back to normal in the volume of youth we are seeing but not back to normal in what they need from us,” said Mike Kelso, Executive Director at Cadillac Area YMCA. “A lot of social and emotional struggles that take a lot more effort on our part to help out, so hopefully, that funding can give us more resources to help out with social and emotional.”

Governor Whitmer’s proposed investment in education also includes a 5% boost in per-pupil grant and more money for Michigan’s Great Start Readiness Program.
