Working with Northern Michigan University, Pellston Schools is giving the community another option for high speed internet.

On Wednesday, workers from the university started installing LTE broadband service on the top of the middle and high school.

With an at least nine mile radius, the internet will be available to everyone in the community and at a discounted price for families with students and veterans.

The need for more internet options became more noticeable as they along with many other schools across the state dealt with shutdowns because of the COVID pandemic.

“Through the pandemic we’ve learned the need for remote learning for students,” said Stephen Seelye, Superintendent of Pellston Schools. “Over the past two years we’ve been closed down and needed to provide internet to our families and still we’re forced with quarantines and kids that have to stay home and do remote learning.”

Northern Michigan University has already made their way through the upper peninsula with similar installations, and are now focusing on northern lower Michigan to give students the internet access they need.
