A 29-year-old St. Ignace man was arrested Thursday evening for operating a vehicle while intoxicated after Mackinac City police say he crashed into the back of a patrol car on the Mackinac Bridge.

Around 7 p.m. Thursday, a Mackinaw City police officer was assisting a broken down vehicle on the south end of the Mackinac Bridge. According to police, an officer parked behind the disabled vehicle with his overhead emergency lights on and while waiting for the tow truck to arrive, another vehicle crashed into the back of the patrol car. The officer was in the patrol car at the time of crash but was not injured.

The suspect’s vehicle was occupied by the driver and one passenger. Neither were injured in the crash.

The driver, a St. Ignace man, was subsequently arrested and transported to the Cheboygan County Jail. He is being charged with operating while intoxicated and having open intoxicants in the car.
