TCAPS Reinstating Universal Mask Mandate

Traverse City Area Public Schools is dealing with a staffing shortage, causing some schools to close for several days.

On Monday night during a TCAPS meeting, members discussed staffing shortage problems.

The school board voted to reinstate universal masking mandates starting Wednesday.

This means face masks will be required indoors for all pre-K through 12th-grade students.

The order will go until the Benzie Leelanau Health Department lifts its universal masking mandate.

TCAPS elementary schools will be in person on Tuesday. Middle and High school students will stay remote through Friday with the goal to return to in-person learning on Jan. 18.

TCAPS School Board President Scott Newman-Bale says the school board values in-person learning, but the district does not have the staffing.

He says they need all the substitute teachers they can get.

Generally though, subs are older retired people who may feel uncomfortable in schools during the current COVID-19 surge.
