Traverse City’s Dennos Museum Center Passes Important Milestone

Traverse City’s Dennos Museum Center announced Friday that they have passed the American Alliance of Museum’s Core Documents Verification.

They say this is an important milestone in their continuous efforts to demonstrate excellence, as well as meet standards and best practices.

According to the Dennos Museum Center, earning Core Documents Verification means that, “the museum industry has verified—through a thorough expert review—that the museum has an educational mission; and ethics, planning, emergency, and collections stewardship policies in place that reflect standard practices of professional museums.”

They say the components were evaluated because they were deemed essential for every institution that identifies as a professional member of the museum field.

Of the 33,000 museums in the United States, fewer than 4% have completed the optional Core Documents Verification process. Dennos Museum Center is one of 38 museums in Michigan to have passed the Core Documents Verification process.

Dennos Museum Center says that one reason they underwent the review was to, “show the public that the museum has in place the policies and plans that are essential to good museum management and which provide our staff and governing authority the structure, ethical grounding, and accountability needed to make informed and consistent decisions for the good of our public and in support of our mission and sustainability.”

“We are proud to be a leader and a role model among our community college museum peers,” said Craig Hadley, Executive Director and Chief Curator at the Dennos Museum Center. “The Core Documents Verification program demonstrates to our community, our supporters, and our visitors that the museum is committed to operating at a very high level of professionalism. We are delighted that the American Alliance of Museums has reaffirmed the incredible work that takes place each and every day at the Dennos.”
