Railings Stop Car from Going off the Mackinac Bridge Following Crash

A crash on the Mackinac Bridge caused it to be shut down for a few hours on Friday.

A car was heading north when the driver lost control and went over the median. That car then hit another that was heading the other direction, and crashed into the side railing.

The car was leaning on the side of the bridge, but eventually stopped.

The bridge was closed and traffic started backing up, but the bridge was reopened after the cars were removed.

According to Communications Representative of the Michigan Department of Transportation James Lake, while the car did strike the side railing, damage was minimal.

“Once the vehicles were removed, our staff at Mackinac Bridge Authority inspected that railing and they found that the railing system was sound,” said Lake. “The top bar of that railing was bent slightly but that’s a repair they can make at a later date.”

All three people in the crash were brought to the hospital and treated for non-life threatening injuries.
