“It’s funny because I’m putting the energy back in the energy bar business.”

Matt Dykema is making a wave in the way athletes eat. He’s the owner of a natural energy bar business in Traverse City.

“Is it E.R.G. is it ? It’s both,” says Dykema. But what does that even mean?

Well— it’s a mathematical equation.

He tells me, “It’s a unit of energy. I think it’s like 10 million ergs equal a jewel. It’s an actual physics term. That’s pretty cool, ya know that’s what it means. It’s like energy and that’s what we’re giving you.”

Keeping the focus on energy.

“For me at least, I can feel the effects. I eat one of these verses a cliff bar, I can last probably two hours. A cliff bar it’s like 45 minutes…boinking again.”

And natural ingredients.

“It’s not going to be your chocolate, sea salt, kelp covered candy bar as an energy bar. It’s not gonna be a bar that tastes like cardboard. You can understand what’s on them, what’s in them. We have 9 ingredients on most of them. We don’t add any sugars, it’s all honey based.”

Staying active and living a healthy lifestyle is what E.R.G. is all about.

Dykema says, “The United States has a huge problem with obesity, and I think it comes down to people not understanding what’s good for you anymore. The big thing is to get in with the kids when they’re younger so that they understand what’s good for them later and they develop good habits.”

Dykema prides himself on showing off Northern Michigan. Living all across North America — with stops in Canada, Montana, Minnesota, Ohio, and Florida.
But it always comes back to his Northern Michigan roots.

“I think a lot of people that don’t live in Michigan, don’t really understand what northern Michigan is really all about. All the great activities we have up here and then you add all the produce and the wine, the cherries, and just everything. I usually say to sell a piece of Michigan to the world.”

And he already has lots of plans for what’s next.
