A preservation team is now working to preserve several items uncovered when they opened a time capsule in Virginia.

The 134-year-old metal box was found last week under the Robert E. Lee statue in Richmond while crews were taking down the pedestal that used to hold the monument.

After hours of work to safely and carefully get the box opened, the crew found a thin, wet maroon-colored book, a coin, an envelope and some papers.

Historians say the capsule was probably buried on Oct. 27, 1887.

State records show a few dozen residents and businesses in the area placed about 60 items in the capsule, many of which are likely linked to the confederacy.
