Doppler 9&10 STEM: Gumdrop City

Teachers & Parents:

Does your kid have a science question?

Have them send us a video with a weather question to weather@9and10news.com!

You thought you were done making Holiday treats in STEM? Nope, I have another one your you and the kids. Engineering your building using gumdrops, toothpicks, and anything else you can think of.

Here is what you will need if you want to try this one at home:

  • Toothpicks
  • Plate
  • Ruler
  • Timer (optional)
  • Gumdrops or Dots
  • M&Ms
  • Graham Crackers
  • Book (to see how strong your structure is)
  • Build as many buildings as you want!
  •  We are going to build three different structures (or more). Remember the notepad and the hypothesis? We are going to make an educated guess once again. What structure do you think will be the strongest that you are going to build?

If you have ever been to a big city, you know there are some HUGE buildings. But how do engineers build such tall buildings? It has to do with the foundation. If the building does not have a solid foundation, it has a greater risk of damaging or falling in the wind.  This concept is similar to the game Jenga. When the tower gets taller, it is more likely to tumble. It is more likely the blocks fall when are removing blocks from the original foundation in Jenga.

What do you think will have the best foundation? A triangle, square, or diamond? I like to build the tallest I can build my gumdrop tower. You can also time yourself how quickly you can build a gumdrop tower or gumdrop city! This may work for your Christmas village this year!

If you do not want to use these buildings as part of your Christmas decorations this year, how about seeing if a book supports your building as we did!

If your kiddos try this experiment, send us photos of you and your experiment and you might get to see it during weather on The Four on Tuesdays!

Make sure you tune in every Tuesday for a New 9&10 STEM. Send us an email at  or find us on Facebook and at Doppler 9&10 Weather Team if you have a weather question or want something in science explained! It does not have to be weather-related! Anything Science or math-based we’ve got you! You can always get the latest forecast on 9and10news.com/weather as well as interact with us on social media!
