Producer Picks: “Be My Eyes” App

We talked about the “Be My Eyes” app a couple of years ago on ‘the four’. It’s a free-to-use app that uses video calls to connect visually impaired users with sighted volunteers. And, since it’s “Gift of Sight” Month, I thought I’d bring it back again.

The app launched in 2015 and has nearly 5.5-million volunteers ready to help those who have trouble seeing – like blindness. It’s one of the largest micro-volunteering platforms in the world.

To join “Be My Eyes” as a volunteer simply register and fill out some information about yourself. Users have to allow notifications and microphone access. Then, when someone needs help, like reading a label, finding something in their house… you’ll get a notification.
