Sault Ste. Marie Pays Tribute To Those Who Served At Pearl Harbor

80 years ago in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, a Japanese attack on American forces changed the world.

On Tuesday, Sault Ste. Marie paid tribute to those serving on that day.

American Legion Post Three in Sault Ste. Marie welcomed guests and veterans Tuesday morning.

The U.S. Coast Guard Sector Sault, the VFW and the Vietnam Veterans of America all took part in the memorial.

There was a 21 gun salute, and a tossing of a wreath into the St. Mary’s River to honor those lost on that fateful day and the world war that followed.

This is a day in history that should never be forgotten.

“As long as the United States is the United States, those that forget history are doomed to repeat it,” said Roger Merchberger, Post Commander of American Legion Post 3. “We still celebrate July 4th, we still remember what happened during the Civil War…again, so things like that never happen again.”

2,403 Americans died at Pearl Harbor.

For about 1,100 sailors and marines, the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial is their final resting place.
