Local heath departments and Munson Healthcare report seeing their highest number of cases since the start of the pandemic.

Munson says they currently have 146 COVID-19 patients at their hospitals, while Michigan’s percent positivity rate reaches 20.4%.

Grand Traverse County Health Department says they’ve had almost 2,000 new cases and 28 deaths within the last 30 days.

DHD #10’s Medical Director, Dr. Jennifer Morse, says the number of deaths and the age of people’s deaths have been the most disturbing during this latest surge.

“The age seems to be a lot younger than what we had seen in previous surges, so a lot of 30, 40, 50 year olds,” said Dr. Morse. “Still seeing 80, 90 I recall seeing a 100 year old, but again just a lot of really young people.”

Munson Healthcare is encouraging those who are sick with minor symptoms to make an appointment with their primary care doctor, or go to urgent care, before going to the ER.
