Small Business Saturday started in November of 2010 by American Express. It’s a day to focus on local businesses in the community instead of big box stores.
In Sault Ste. Marie, several small, locally-owned businesses have opened up the past few years.
Last year was an off day for many due to the pandemic.
But this year, customers opened their wallets and purses finding great deals on many unique items.
Supporting local keeps the money local too.
“This holiday season, it seems like everyone is so happy and they are really spending their money and they are using small businesses to spend their money, so that makes me happy!” said Sharolyn Reed, an elf greeter at Up North Wilderness
For every dollar spent at a local business, 68 cents stays local, compared to 43 cents at a big box store.
