67-year-old Theodore Gauthier from Pontiac has died following a plane crash in Clare County, according to the Clare County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies say at about 9:30 Friday morning, there was a single engine plane crash in the area of Rosina and Townline in Hayes Township. Sheriff’s deputies and Michigan State Troopers have responded to the scene.

“Upon arrival, deputies and troopers found the lone occupant, the pilot, deceased,” said Clare County Undersheriff Dwyane Miedzianowski.

Gauthier was the only one in the plane. He passed away in the crash.

Witnesses from the Harrison RV Family Campground saw the whole crash happen.

“I was outside of my trailer here in this park, and I saw a plane that appeared to be trying to go one way, and then somehow ended up a different direction,” said Tammy Dutton from Harrison. “There was just this big bang, we thought it was an explosion.”

Ricky Smith was out raking the leaves in his front yard when he heard a noise in the sky.

“I looked back up into the sky up over here just in time to see it, I mean, it was a hard angle to the ground,” said Smith.

He said he also heard a loud noise.

“Just a hard impact,” said Smith. “Just a ‘bow!’ and then it was silent.”

The crash remains under investigation by the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
