For the first time a lake monitoring buoy is on East Grand Traverse Bay, helping Great Lakes researchers monitor the changes of the water.

One of the three buoys was placed in the Grand Traverse Bay in a collaboration with Northwestern Michigan College and Michigan Technological University.

“We have never had any measurements in East Grand Traverse Bay previously, and having three strategically placed allows comparative understanding of the three separate but connected water bodies,” said Hans VanSumeren, director of NMC’s Great Lakes Water Studies Institute.

The buoys were purchased with a $50,000 grant from Great Lakes Observing System.

Data, seen includes wind speeds and directions, wave height and direction and water temperature . Changes to the lakes can impact public health and safety as well as explain the effects of climate change.

“The impacts of climate change on the Great Lakes are very real,” says VanSumeren. “The buoys will help inform us on how we’re seeing change and at what pace we’re seeing the change.”

The buoys are placed near East Bay Park in East Bay, near Greilickville in West Bay, and near North Manitou Island in Lake Michigan.
