The Biden administration has unveiled a new program to help move approximately 55,000 Afghan refugees from U.S. military bases into permanent homes.

The new program aims to connect evacuees with Americans who are willing to help.

In the “sponsor circle program,” groups of at least five people offer to provide housing, financial support, medical services, employment, and other needs for at least 90 days.

The program is modeled after a similar program in Canada that’s been in place for the past 40 years.

Advocates say getting refugees off military bases as quickly as possible is necessary as more evacuees wait to enter the U.S.
