October 20th is Unity Day. It’s a day to promote anti-bullying and encourage kindness towards one another.

Wexford-Missaukee Intermediate School District Career Technical Center participates in Unity Day each year. This is the tenth year. Unity Day is mainly promoted by , a national child advocacy group, through it’s National Bullying Prevention Center.

Every year, students and teachers will wear orange to promote the message of kindness, acceptance and inclusion. Teachers will write positive messages for each student, to put on lockers. Many of the notes will be kept up until May.

“It’s just really important to come together for a day to really assure all those people who have experienced it,” says student, Cameron Marquardt. “You never really know what they’re going through. It could always be the final point for them.”

Marquardt is in his second year at the CTC. He says though he hasn’t experienced it, bullying is a serious problem among kids.

“I have seen many people that have experienced it especially with the cyber bullying,” he says. “There’s many Instagram accounts that I’ve seen that are trying to slander someone or blackmail them. ”

Marquardt says its an opportunity for not just the school but the community to make a difference in someone’s life.

“One thing I think everyone should take away from this is to be kind to everybody for no reason,” he says. “Everybody deserves kindness. You never really know what somebody is going through. It’s always nice to be nice because that’s the right thing to do.”

Students and staff at Wexford-Missaukee CTC are encouraged to show their unity day spirit by eating lunch with a new friend, picking up litter or a simple act of kindness.
