Harbor Springs Has Five Write-in Candidates for Two City Council Positions

Harbor Springs is going through a unique election to fill two open city council positions. This time around they have nobody on the ballot, only five write-in candidates.

There was originally one qualified person who applied for the position, but after the city missed a filing deadline, they couldn’t put them on the ballot. Voters will now have to write in specifically who they want to see on city council.

If no one would had submitted an application, the current city council would have had to appoint two members, but with five possible candidates, City Clerk Nick Whitaker says they’ll have those positions filled by the end of the election. “It is a time commitment,” he said. “People have to do their homework on the issues at hand and then attend the meetings. We’ve been pretty fortunate here though. We’ve got people that are interested.”

The deadline for candidates to apply for a write-in is Oct. 22 at 4 p.m.
