Michigan’s Department of Natural Resources is helping boost the work of the state’s fisheries with more than $1 million in aquatic resources.
The money is awarded through the Fisheries Habitat Grant, to the Au Sable, Manistee and Muskegon River Watersheds.
The three areas of focus for project proposals include conservation, dam management and recreation.
They’ll help fish and humans alike.
“All of Michigan’s fisheries which provide a multi-billion dollar industry in the state rely on healthy fish habitats for reproduction of the fish and those are the fish that ultimately grow into the ones that we catch. For our lakes and streams, water for drinking. These are benefits that come from healthy, functioning ecosystems,” said Joe Nohner, a DNR Habitat Analyst.
Fisheries Habitat Grant dollars are competitive, but are open to local, state, federal, tribal and nonprofit groups.
