Military Vets Can Now Convert Active Sea Service Credit Towards Bachelor’s Degree

Big news from Northwestern Michigan College’s Maritime Academy in Traverse City: they’re giving veterans a head start.

Military veterans can now convert active sea service into credit toward an Engineering Officer Bachelor’s Degree.

The approval happened last Thursday, and it means more credentialed engineers graduating soon to help the merchant marine industry.

“There’s only 6-8 maritime academies in the nation. There’s New York, Boston, San Francisco and there’s one in Traverse City. If you’re even thinking about going back to college and you have any interest, call us up and we’ll take a tour of the academy. It’s a great resource,” said Gerard Achenbach, Superintendent of Great Lakes Maritime Academy.

The program is good until 2026, and the college plans to extend it even further.
