A group of 12 West Michigan residents in their sixties were chosen as 60 Strong ambassadors on Friday.

The new program is aimed at keeping senior citizens healthy and helping them navigate Medicare coverage.

The 60 Strong ambassadors were treated to professional photoshoots in Grand Rapids and Traverse City on Friday and Saturday.

They will be featured in the 2022 West Michigan 60 Strong calendar, highlighting activities around West Michigan.

Each 60 Strong ambassador was nominated by family members or friends.

A panel of celebrity judges from West Michigan then selected the winners based on their remarkable accomplishments, from overcoming health conditions and other adversities.

60 Strong ambassador Anne Stanton is being honored for her journalistic contributions.

The Traverse City writer founded Mission Point Press and Front Street Writers, a professional writing program for high school students.

When Stanton is not writing, she is promoting her own healthy lifestyle through hiking, running and mountain biking.

She believes with a positive and realistic mindset, you can achieve any goal you set your mind to.

“I say be good to yourself, have a great attitude and the more you can do something with a friend, I think the more likely it will be successful,” said Stanton.

Stanton also wrote her own series in Traverse City Magazine called, “The Unstoppable.”

“It’s just about ordinary people who have had extraordinary challenges and have just kept exercising and finding a way to stay fit, and their stories are really, really fun,” said Stanton.

60 Strong coordinator Lisa Stafford is at the head of the new program.

She hopes to highlight an age group that often faces many challenges.

“60 Strong is about grit and resilience, said Stafford. “It’s about giving back to your community, and it’s about living a healthy life all these people that were selected by celebrity judges are very healthy and fit—and they all do wonderful things for other people, and for their community.”

Stafford believes another defining trait of the group is their perseverance.

“The one thing about 60 Strong ambassadors is, they never say ‘I can’t,'” said Stafford. “They always say, ‘I can. I can do it.’”

West Michigan 60 Strong is sponsored by Answer Health, a physician group in conjunction with Answer Health Senior Care Advantage.

Calendars can be purchased at the beginning of October, through www.WestMI60Strong.com.
