The United States and France are working to repair relations after the U.S. made a nuclear submarine deal with Australia, undercutting a deal they originally had with the French.

French officials had described last week’s submarine announcement as “a crisis of trust” between nations.

French President Emmanuel Macron had only been informed of the deal a few hours beforehand.

Now, in a carefully crafted joint statement between Macron and President Biden, both said reassuring trust and confidence is of the utmost importance.

The French ambassador is set to return to Washington next week after being pulled out over the submarine deal.

The ambassador will start intensive work with U.S. officials as part of ongoing steps to repair the relationship between our country and France.
