Multiple Fire Departments Called to Fire in Charlevoix Condo Complex

The Charlevoix Township Fire Department got the call at about 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, saying there was smoke coming out of Captain’s Watch Condos on Park Avenue.

Several departments including Charlevoix Township, Petoskey, and Boyne City all showed up to help out.

Everyone was able to get out of the building safely with some exiting on their own, and others being assisted by firefighters. There were between 50 and 60 firefighters on the scene.

“Normally in a situation like this when we come together we all, we’re all out here doing one thing and put the fire out and make sure everyone is safe,” said Dan Thorp,  Charlevoix Township Fire Department chief. “Everybody did an extreme job and I appreciate everybody’s help.”

The heavy winds Thursday made things more difficult even with the amount of rain coming down early in the day.

“When you get a fire this size, there’s a lot of small areas that the fires can get into,” said Chief Thorp. “The main thing is getting to it, finding it, and putting a stop on it.”

The American Red Cross was also at the scene, helping out the residents find other places to stay and give them food.
