Contributors plunged their shovels into the ground with excitement in Grayling Wednesday as they unveiled the location for the new 40,000 square-foot housing complex.

They hope the completed project will house more employees to join the workforce for downtown businesses.

The $12 million apartment complex will hold 42 units ranging from studios, one bedroom, and two bedroom floorplans. It was made possible through contributions from Michigan Community Capital, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation, the Michigan Department of Environment Great Lakes and Energy, the city of Grayling, and Crawford County.

Vice President of Investment for Michigan Community Capital, Marilyn Crowley, said this project has been in the works for a long time. “We’ve been working on this project for a few years now,” she said. “It’s just been a lot of partnership to get the building to be able to be built. So we’re excited to get started.”

The new building should allow for more people to move downtown and work at the many businesses. “We’re hearing that employers are growing and can’t find enough employees,” said Crowley. “They don’t have anywhere to live so we’re excited to bring a moderately priced housing product to the region.”

Once completed, this new addition will be one of a kind in the downtown area. “The project itself is going to be the biggest, at five stories, in all of downtown grayling and probably the first new construction in a multi use function in many many years,” said Daniel Leonard, community assistance team specialist with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation.

The 40,000 square foot property was listed as a priority site and city officials were happy to see it put to use, and a project like this probably won’t be the last.

“This is hopefully the first project in the city of grayling that the MEDC is partnering with to bring new construction downtown.”

Michigan Community Capital said they hope to bring more projects like this one to other areas in and around Grayling as well as the whole state. They also completed a 42-unit complex in Cadillac and 67-unit complex in Traverse City.
