A disgraced South Carolina lawyer is waking up in jail after turning himself in.

Alex Murdaugh is accused of hiring a hitman to kill him in a botched insurance fraud scheme.

Police say Murdaugh paid a hitman to shoot him in the head in order to leave a $10 million insurance policy to his oldest son.

The plot failed after the hitman shot Murdaugh and he suffered a skull fracture and brain bleed, but did not die.

The hitman is facing several charges including assisted suicide and conspiracy to commit insurance fraud.

Murdaugh is not only facing charges from this incident. He is also a main suspect in multiple deaths.

On June 7, both his wife and one of his sons was shot and killed at the family home. That case is still unsolved.

Investigators have also opened an investigation into the 2018 death of the Murdaugh family’s housekeeper, who died in a trip-and-fall accident.

An autopsy was never performed in that case.
