TCAPS Student Struck by Pickup Truck While Crossing for Bus Stop

A 17-year-old male Traverse City Area Public Schools student was struck by a pickup truck Thursday morning while crossing a roadway to head to a bus stop.

The Grand Traverse County Sheriff’s Office responded to the vehicle-pedestrian accident around 7 a.m. on Peninsula Drive near McKinley Road in Peninsula Township.

The student was struck while crossing a roadway as a sound bound school bus he was going to get on approached. He was struck by a north bound pickup truck. The area where the accident happened was a straight roadway in a 35 mile per hour zone.

The student was conscious at the scene and is being treated at Munson Medical Center for his injuries.

Although the investigation is open, speed, alcohol or drugs are not believed to have played a factor in the accident.

“Flashing yellow lights indicate drivers must prepare to stop. Red means stop,” said TCAPS superintendent Dr. John VanWagoner in a statement. “School is back in session and drivers are responsible for honoring school bus traffic laws to keep students safe. Today’s incident is an unfortunate reminder about the critical importance of school buses and student safety.”

TCAPS says social workers are available for students and staff Thursday who either witnessed or are struggling to comprehend the experience.
